Pierce was under the influence of YA through two men, George Sanders and Jefferson Davis, who were very influential in the Democrat Party, to the extent that he appointed many YA adherents to important posts both overseas and domestically, such as Caleb Cushing as attorney general.

Cushing was a contributor to the Democratic Review, which had become George Sanders’ YA newspaper. Cushing went on to chair both Democratic conventions of 1860, the Douglas party and the Breckinridge party. He was sent by Buchanan to South Carolina with a letter to Gov. Francis Pickens urging the people of the state to await the action of the Congress before seceding.

The fact that Cushing chaired both Democratic conventions illustrates the fact that conspirators split the party to ensure the election of the Republican Party candidate, regardless of who that candidate would have been. The reaction of such an election led to the average Southerner believing that secession was the only solution to saving Southern culture and the principles of the Constitution. Slavery was an issue, but not the overwhelming reason for secession. More on this tactic later.

A delegate to both of these Democrat conventions was Richard Jacobs Haldeman. He studied in Heidelberg and Berlin after attending Yale, where he had become a member of the Order. He was a U.S. congressman from Pennsylvania, and was our attaché at the legation in Paris in 1853 and then at St. Petersburg and Vienna.

The YA individuals whom Pierce appointed as representatives to Europe were: Daniel E. Sickles from New York as our London consular attaché and 1st secretary, who would later murder the son of the composer of The Star Spangled Banner and get off scot-free; August Belmont as minister to the Netherlands, where he was able to help his bosses, the Rothschilds, at the same time; Pierre Soulé to Spain; John L. O’Sullivan, minister to Portugal, where he harbored the assassin Victor Frond, whom Sanders had hired to attempt to kill Napoleon III; John Y. Mason to Paris; George Sanders as consul to London, where he created a groundswell of anti-American feeling among the leaders of the European nations along with James Buchanan as minister to the Court of St. James; Nathaniel Hawthorne as consul to Liverpool; Edwin de Leon as consul to Egypt; and while, not a Carbonari, the communist leader Robert Dale Owen as U.S. minister to the Kingdom of Naples.

We have not gone out of our way to spend time looking at the specific problem of ambassadors. These men appointed by Pierce have been the obvious ones as this work was researched on the whole. Later presidents continued the problem. A full-scale investigation would probably reveal far more men who did not have the historical reputation to stand out as revolutionaries. If these men stood out, how many did not but were part of the conspiratorial forces as representatives of the U.S.?

The appointment of Pierre Soulé was especially vexing to the government of Spain. Soulé was a close friend of George Sanders and an adherent of YA.
